LOCATION
This town, two hours from Rome, one from Naples, laies on the promontory Mount Orlando, which encloses the "Gulf of Gaeta" striking into the Tyrrhenian Sea.
On the Mount, the Aragonese fortress dominates the promontory and the Sea around.
In the middle-age historical center - in which is situated the apartment - only 50 m from the house, there is the small ancient port in which you can rent small boats to take you along the coastwhich consists of small, green promontories on which small ancient sighting-towers against Saracens take place, from the shore of " Serapo "- between mount Orlando and the hill of "Catena" - to the shore of "S.Agostino".
Daily excursions to the wild and wonderful Pontine Islands by hydrofoils are available.
In the afternoon, when a strong wind rises while the sea rests calm, the Gulf become filled with windsurfs. The coast, from the shore of " serapo "- between mount Orlando and the hill of "catena" - to the shore of "S.Agostino", consists of small, green promontories on which small ancient sighting-towers against Saracens take place. In between that promontories small bays with or without white sand (Fontania, Ariana, Arenauta and S.Vito) make this coast one of the most beautiful and panoramic of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Gaeta was and is residence of Bishop's palace.
Greek civilization greatly influenced the people in this area, although Gaeta was not a Greek colony.
During Roman times this town was known as a famous resort with a good harbour for ships. The via Flacca (a Roman road built in 184 B.C., ) - which still connects Gaeta with Rome - leading towards the town of Sperlonga, was lined with beautiful villas, gardens, swimming pools, nymphaeums and mausoleums.
The best preserved is Villa of emperor Tiberius, located just below the Sperlonga Museum. Two mausoleums are still in Gaeta: Plancus Mausoleum on mount Orlando which is the best preserved one in all of Italy, and Atratino Mausoleum. The flacca road, built in 184 B.C., still connects Gaeta with Rome.
